Hand forged wrought iron chisels (for sale)
This video shows the forging of special wrought iron framing chisels we are now offering for sale on our website. These chisels are my own design, a mixture of Japanese and early American framing chisels. They are made of antique wrought iron which gives the most amazing appearance after acid etching and polishing. Very special tools and process, completely unlike anything else in the world.
Chisels are available on our website at mrchickadee.com/tools-for-sale/

Making a steam bent firewood carrier with hand tools from green wood

Past years i've used my arm or a wheelbarrow to bring firewood to the house, neither being that practical for us. I finally made time this year to make a few steam bent wooden carriers. Some green hickory was used from our pond where ive always got staves stored. This wood was split and shaved then steamed and bent into a simple form to dry a few days. Round tenons and a few dry pegs keep it al...

Hand splitting and sculpting large plinth stones for timber frame foundation

We found a great deal on some old RR bridge stones put in back in the WPA days under Roosevelt. These things are massive, weighing around 1Ton each, and needed to be broken up before being movable. A cape chisel and wedges made the splits then a stone hammer and some chisels to clean them up and give a more natural shape. Making a saw buck and cutting firewood with hand tools

Really interesting to see how old school techniques do the same thing as modern construction. The footers with vertical stones and gravel are really interesting and it's cool seeing the stone-contact wood getting charred to prevent water from wicking into it instead of using pressure treated lumber. That scribing technique is still used a lot, but rarely on that complex a 3D shape. I'd be tempted to flatten the stone instead but maybe that would take longer or weaken it.

Some very high level of skill, craftsmanship and concentration. Why were the sill posts scribed overtop the stones and not fastened in any way? They could slip under the stress of a storm. Or is that a proven over time traditional Japanese architecture? Amazing how those hand chiseled tenons all fit together. Thanks!

Thank you very much to demonstrate the full process with a scythe. Other video did not go in detail as you did. Two things I see in other demos was you are kinda pulling with left hand in the motion and push with right. Is this correct? Another is sharpening is slightly less pressure with pushing the stone then first honing on pulling. Like you said you need burr to be up to cut. Just verifying technique.

Fascinating for me. Wood and I don’t get on, have reached 50+ and am still wholly unable to saw straight. The sad thing is that I try so hard, I’ve even resorted to using mitre guides and they still come out wrong. Any other trade I can get by, but not joinery, I have a lignin autism.

How "scaleable" is this technique? I would think this would work just as well on a larger footprint, say 20x30. What do you think? A friend of mine was inspired by your videos and this technique and built his cabin this way! I'm hoping to do the same, just a bit larger if I can!

Hello I'm currently designing a building with the aim to use no/as little concrete and was wondering if you reckon your method of connecting the timber column to the stone foundation via a metal rid would work in a stone wall that was already made and mortared together, ie. picking out a stone along the wall and then implementing your method (In practical terms I can imagine it would be a bit of a nuisance to hold the column above the stone but in theory would the stone wall be able to support the load). Another thing I am curious about is there a specific type of stone that works best ie. metamorphic/sedimentary/igneous rock.
